From Zoology to Lead Technical Engineer
Andy’s journey over the past decade perfectly reflects the opportunities available at Uniware. His progression from warehouse operations to Lead Engineer demonstrates his commitment, adaptability, and technical expertise. He has played an important role in strengthening our client relationships and enhancing security standards.
When Andy joined Uniware ten years ago, his background was in zoology. After the zoo he worked at closed, he decided to take his career in a new direction. Through a friend, he was introduced to Uniware, a move that would shape the next decade of his professional life.
Today, Andy is Lead Engineer, playing a key role in delivering cutting-edge technology solutions to clients across the UK.
We spoke to him about his journey, how the technology has evolved, and what makes Uniware such a great place to work.
How has your role changed over the last 10 years?
“When I first joined Uniware, I was responsible for receiving and checking in equipment. It was a hands-on introduction to the business and the technology we deliver to clients.
Over time, my role has grown alongside the company. I’m now Lead Engineer, heading out to client sites to install and implement systems. I also oversee the security side of our equipment, ensuring customer data is fully protected, which is a huge responsibility and something we take very seriously.
I’ve completed training courses along the way, but the majority of my development has been hands-on. That real-world experience, working directly with clients and evolving technology, is second to none. Uniware has given me the opportunity to continuously grow, take on more responsibility, and build a long-term career.”
How has the technology changed over the last decade?
“The pace of change has been incredible. Self-serve tills and kiosks have evolved massively, and Uniware’s EPOS software has continually developed to unlock even more potential from that hardware.
What I really value is that Uniware isn’t just keeping up with technology, we’re helping drive it. Our software enhances what the hardware can do, creating innovative opportunities for clients to improve efficiency and customer experience.
Every time new technology comes onto the market, it’s a rewarding challenge to learn it, implement it, and make it work for our clients. With AI now exploding into the EPOS world, it feels like we’re on the edge of another exciting transformation. I’m genuinely excited to see what comes next.”
What’s it like to work at Uniware?
“The team is one of the best parts of working here. From day one, I felt supported. The management team, especially Paul Hemsley, have always been approachable, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping people develop.
There’s a real sense that we’re all in it together. We support each other, we share knowledge, and we’re not afraid to roll our sleeves up and get stuck in. There’s also plenty of humour along the way. It’s a hardworking environment, but it’s enjoyable too.
Uniware’s culture is open and honest. People are encouraged to grow, to challenge themselves, and to keep learning. After ten years, I’m still developing, and that says a lot.”
How does it feel to be part of a larger SaaS group?
“The transition from an independent company to being part of a larger SaaS group was very smooth. What’s unique is that Uniware has retained its identity.
We still operate with the agility and personal service of an independent business, able to respond quickly and work closely with our clients. But at the same time, we now have the resources, stability, and professionalism that come with being part of one of the largest SaaS organisations in the world.
For our clients, that’s a powerful combination. They get innovation and flexibility, backed by scale and reliability.”
